The Clubhouse Model was originally developed in 1977 by Fountain House, a program in New York City. The founders in Rochester took the model and started the Rochester Foundation for Brain Injury in 1989 and then in 2002, the name was officially changed to the Hickok Center for Brain Injury, Inc. In this model, members develop skills through performing the functions of operating the clubhouse. The clubhouse program model is a member-driven model and program participants are referred to as “members”. The members work with supportive staff to operate the clubhouse. The flexible setting of the clubhouse allows members to select the skills that they wish to develop and have the freedom to learn at their own pace.
In addition to the work operating the clubhouse, members have the opportunity to socialize with peers at the clubhouse and participate in community social and recreational events. Our goal is to provide social contacts for members to reduce their isolation in the community and ultimately to provide new relationships which will carry over outside of the clubhouse setting.
