The Hickok Center’s approach to ILST (Independent Living Skills Training) is unique in that we have three specialty services:
Pre-Vocational Development Created to provide members with the basic skills necessary for successful employment. It is not a job placement service. Instead it is a one to one service to explore skills and interests and then “try on” related jobs via volunteer positions and/or community oriented activities. Websites, computer programs, and old fashioned hard work come together to build social skills useful in the workplace, along with valuable experience for building up that resume.
Academic Support Program Created to meet the cognitive demands of academic study within the context of the challenges that often accompany brain injury. Often short term memory and skills associated with the organization of materials and information are impaired. The focus of our academic ILST program is on matching the cognitive style of the learner with the material being presented. Parallel texts, alternate presentation and/or modification of the delivery of the material are all explored with the direction of a NY State certified special education and reading teacher.
Personal Fitness Program Provided by a Certified Post-Rehabilitation Specialist and Certified Personal Trainer. Confidential fitness assessments are done prior to any program set-up and goals and desired outcomes are discussed at the initial meeting. Whatever the desired outcomes are: Cardio or muscular endurance, improved mobility, flexibility, strength, improved eating habits, weight loss, or improved balance and coordination, it is targeted using a combination of fitness equipment, such as Spinning bikes, Treadmill, Free-weights, Leg Machines, Step, trampolines, BOSU’S, PNF Stretching , Pilates, and yoga. Weigh-ins and body measurements along with body fat percents are taken weekly to ensure that goals are being achieved. The Hickok Center has our own gym completely equipped for your fitness needs.
