HICKOK CENTER’s CEO RECEIVES “FOUNDERS AWARD” FROM THE BRAIN INJURY ASSOCIATION OF NY STATE

Elaine Comarella receives award from Brain Injury Association of New York StateROCHESTER, NY, June 6, 2011– The Hickok Center for Brain Injury is happy to announce that their Chief Executive Officer, Elaine Comarella was nominated and selected to receive the 2011 “Founders Award” from the Brain Injury Association of New York State. The award was presented to her last week at the New York State Brain Injury Conference in Albany, NY. The Founders Award is given in recognition of outstanding efforts to help establish new services or opportunities for persons with brain injuries and their families. Comarella became CEO of the Hickok Center for Brain Injury in 2005 after 25 years in the Human Services field. Since then, the Hickok Center for Brain Injury has made significant accomplishments including increasing revenue by 75% from about $250,000 to nearly $1 Million dollars, purchasing a 30,000 square foot building in Rochester, establishing a satellite in Newark, NY and increasing service offerings to include day and residential habilitation, independent living skills training, pre-vocational training and community integration counseling. 
 
HICKOK CENTER FOR BRAIN INJURY PARTICIPANTS GIVE BACK TO RAISE HOPE FOR OTHER BRAIN INJURY SURVIVORS

ROCHESTER, NY, Sept. 27, 2010 – The Hickok Center for Brain Injury’s program participants are spreading hope about life after a brain injury. On October 6, 2010, the Center participants will be presenting a Mandela Quilt made at the Hickok Center to the patients at the Unity Hospital Brain Injury Unit. Each square of the quilt was produced by a Hickok Center participant and focuses on hope and recovery. Many of the Center’s participants were patients at the Unity Brain Injury unit (then St. Mary’s) after they received their brain injuries and credit their recovery to the wonderful people at St Mary’s Brain Injury Unit. The quilt was produced as part of an art therapy grant from Golisano Foundation with the support of Heather Caton from Wisdom Art.
 
HICKOK CENTER HOSTS FREE EDUCATIONAL PANEL:  ALTERNATIVE THERAPIES FOR SURVIVORS OF BRAIN INJURY

ROCHESTER, NY, June 14, 2010 – The Hickok Center for Brain Injury hosts a free Educational Panel entitled “Alternative Therapies for Survivors of Brain Injury” on Monday, June 28, 2010 at their Rochester Center located at 114 South Union Street, 14607 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. The panel is presented for anyone and everyone interested in learning more about alternative therapies for health, particularly survivors of brain injury, their friends and loved ones. Featured panelists will be: Heather Caton, Art Therapist and President/CEO of Wisdom Art LLC and Founder of the Living Through Art Foundation; Paul Rooney, Acupuncturist and Owner of American Acupuncture Clinic serving Rochester since 1997; and, Dr. Scott Hartter, Chiropractor at Irondequoit Chiropractic Center in West Irondequoit. Bring your lunch and learn about these techniques and their successes for encouraging better health and enhancing quality of life. HICKOK CENTER FOR BRAIN INJURY PARTICIPANT ARTWORK ON DISPLAY AT BOULDER COFFEE THROUHOUT JUNE

ROCHESTER, NY, June 1, 2010 – Boulder Coffee Co. hosts an art show with artwork created by participants from the Hickok Center for Brain Injury, beginning June 1, 2010 at their South Wedge café located at 100 Alexander Street, Rochester, 14611 (corner of Alexander and S. Clinton). The art show at Boulder Coffee Co. is made possible in part by a grant from the Golisano Foundation in support of Hickok Center’s Art Therapy program run by Art Therapist, Heather Caton of Wisdom Art LLC. Boulder Coffee Co.’s South Wedge location hours are Mondays-Wednesdays, 7 a.m.-9 p.m.; Thursdays, 7 a.m. – 10 p.m.; Saturdays, 8 a.m. – 11 p.m.; and, Sundays 8 a.m. – 9 p.m. Original artwork will be on display until June 25, 2010. HICKOK CENTER HOSTS OPEN HOUSE TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS MONTH

ROCHESTER, NY, March 16, 2010 – The Hickok Center for Brain Injury invites everyone in the Monroe County community to join us for an Open House plus Art & Bake Sale Friday, March 26, 2010 at our Rochester Center located at 114 South Union Street, 14607 from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Lot and street parking available. Take a guided tour of our facility, meet members and staff, and enjoy delicious homemade baked goods, as well as a large variety of framed/unframed original and print member-made artwork, photography and note card sets. Living with Epilepsy by the Hickok Center for Brain InjuryROCHESTER, NY, March 15, 2010 – The Hickok Center for Brain Injury hosts a free Brown Bag Educational Panel entitled “The Brain – Living With Epilepsy” on Monday, March 29, 2010 at their Rochester Center located at 114 South Union Street, 14607 from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. The panel will feature: J. Craig Henry, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurology, Strong Epilepsy Center; A. James Fessler, III, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurology at University of Rochester and Director of Clinical Research and Assistant Director, Strong Epilepsy Center; and, Michael Radell, Community Educator, Epilepsy Foundation of Rochester. Bring your lunch and learn about the medical and social issues of living with epilepsy.
